It's one of the fundamental rules for food writing: Observe what others are eating. If you notice a majority of diners with a particular dish, order it. During one of my 2008 visits to Via Vite, I was struck by how many people were gnawing on huge lamb shanks. It was a very carnal scene, and naturally, I was intrigued. Several menus in the city feature similar shanks, but none of them touch Via Vite's. Perhaps it's the depth of flavor, or the infinite tenderness of the meat. Maybe it's the obscenely good polenta underneath: creamy and plush with Parmigiano-Reggiano and rivulets of lamb jus. It's sexy, and I'm mad about it. With its Fountain Square spot, contemporary glass and steel structure, curvaceous details, and bursts of color, Via Vite could get by on good looks and location alone. That the Pietoso family (owners of Nicola's) has ignored simply meeting the standard in favor of working to create a trattoria that buzzes with energy and exemplary dishes is a testament to their solid restaurant genes and passion for food. Thick spears of grilled asparagus, roasted beets, and smears of goat cheese doused in cracked pepper is a salad I often turn to for lunch. For a light dinner, an airy tumble of arugula dressed in lemon and olive oil, tossed with toasted pine nuts and shards of Parmigiano, and paired with a bowl of dark, wickedly seasoned cioppino, is an unbeatable combination for its nuance and intensity. With a steak and side of sautéed mushrooms in brown butter vinaigrette, it's culinary feng shui. Cocktails, late night, lunch, and dinner are all delivered, for the most part, with warm and comfortably hip service (the outdoor deck is most susceptible to inconsistency), making Via Vite an axis both of the city center's rechristening and the restaurant community at large.

Full Story - http://www.cincinnatimagazine.com/article.aspx?id=74420

520 Vine St., downtown, (513) 721-8483

Rank Last Year: Runner-Up Best New

By Donna Covrett

Ten minutes ago, the decibel level from the table of four behind me was considerably louder. Glasses were clinking, congratulations were floating around; anecdotes were started, interrupted, and embellished. But now, curiously, they've turned quiet. I can make out muted grunts, smacks, and moans. A sigh is followed by a drawn out "Ohhh yeaahh," then a "Come to papa." Definitely male. A semi-giggle, a long audible exhale, and then "Oh God!" Decidedly female. It's as if I'm listening to a late-night soft porn movie from another room-the one your partner is watching when he thinks you've fallen asleep. I'm dying to turn around and look, but I already know there is nowhere else to land my eyes if I'm caught staring, as the four diners are directly facing my table from one of Via Vite's high-backed semicircular booths. I wish I could get a full report on the love-fest taking place behind me, but my dining companion chose this moment to run to the car. I crank my head a little to the right-perhaps I'll catch a reflection in the glass. Dammit, nothing. Suddenly, there is a low whisper in my left ear. "Lamb shank with polenta. Cioppino. Bolognese. Pork chop." It's the server. He scoots away faster than he appeared. He's my new best friend.

Click here to read the full article.

wine me, dine me (in Cincinnati)

Author: Julie Neisen

The theme for this week seems to be "Restaurants where we've had small meals at but really want to write up right." Or maybe we just wanted lots of OpenTable points. My motives are not always altruistic.

Terry and I have been to Via Vite once before- we got their late night menu after the Over the Rhine Christmas concert in December. He had a pizza, I had a lobster roll. The pizza had olives and capers and was right up Terry's (and probably Vudutu's!) alley. The lobster roll had a light dressing and was served on good quality bread. I desperately wanted to get back, but it took us a while between travel, shows and weddings.

Click here to read the full article.

CITYBEAT REVIEW: Via Vite

By Lora Arduser

I always had the unsettling feeling that something was missing in Fountain Square's recent transformation. Oh, I know downtown has become more vibrant than it's been in years, but I still felt there was a dining hole.

Even though yummy options sprouted up at every turn, no locally-based dinner restaurant graced the square. Fortunately, Via Vite stepped up to fill that appalling gap.

Click here to read the full article.
